
Gretchen received her BFA in painting, in addition to a BA in German Language and Literature, from the University of Washington in 1998. A year later, she accepted an invitation to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, Germany, where she participated in a guest studies program under East German painter, Max Uhlig.
In Spring 2009, Gretchen graduated with her MFA in painting from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, where she also served as adjunct faculty in the summer of 2009. Gretchen went on to teach painting and drawing as a visiting assistant professor at Denison University in Granville, OH. Last year, Gretchen was the Chair of the Art Department at Emory & Henry College in Emory, VA where she taught studio art courses in 2D design, painting, and drawing. Currently she lives in Salem, VA where she is full time faculty at Roanoke College.
Research: Rabnitzertal Artist Residency in Unterrabnitz, Austria. Recent group exhibitions include “Works on Paper,” juried by Robert Storr, Dean of Yale School of Art and “Contemporary Color Abstraction” at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in Wilmington, Delaware. Recent solo exhibitions include “Get Well Soon,” at the William King Museum, Abingdon, VA; and exhibitions in Rabnitzertal, Austria; Eisenstadt, Austria; Istanbul, Turkey; and Vienna, Austria. Research interests include painting, drawing, critical theory, and visual culture.
Upcoming Research: Artist Residency at Vermont Studios for Winter 2011 and Istanbul, Turkey for Summer 2012.
